The mountain became popular as an extreme sports destination in the twentieth century, with some routes classified as 1A in the winter under the former Soviet Union’s (USSR) grading system. Several deaths have been reported recently as a result of inexperienced extreme lovers attempting to climb the mountain in the winter.
